We pick David up at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport this afternoon and head off the island for the night. No cycling today, David needs to unbox and reassemble his bike before we will be able to start cycling tomorrow.
Once settled at a campsite for the night we have an opportunity to look at the possible route from Montreal to Quebec City, we have several choices. Using the excellent resources available through Velo Quebec along with an app call Komoot we narrow our choices down to three. The shortest route would takes us along the north side of the St. Lawrence and is just under 300 kilometres. What we feel is a much nicer route runs on the south side of the St. Lawrence through the Eastern Townships. It is considerably longer at around 440 kilometres but for most of the ride, you are off road on old rail trails. The northern route for at least the last ¼ of the ride would put us cycling on the shoulder of a major highway. I have had enough of hugging narrow shoulders along highways so we opt for the Eastern Townships and plan for an early start tomorrow.
