Espanola to Sudbury is the last section of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail heading East. Sections of the route were marked as closed which meant being diverted back to the Trans-Canada highway. This was a disappointment after my initial hope that the trail would offer an escape from the noise and heavy traffic. The distance between Espanola and Sudbury is about 74 km. Once again, only short sections of paved shoulder allowed me to feel comfortable cycling through here. Approaching Sudbury, traffic gets very busy which makes sense, with a population of over 170,000 it is the largest city in northern Ontario.
Deb and I haven’t been in Sudbury since probably the late 70’s maybe early 80’s. This time in an RV with a large dog we don’t venture into the city at all. Instead we stop on the edge of Sudbury and check into an RV park run by one of the mining unions. Nice park with lots of facilities and unfortunately lots of mosquitoes. We did manage to have a campfire for awhile but we were finally driven in by the mosquitoes. Yet another night spent mostly indoors. Thank goodness for a good Wi-Fi signal. We hunker down to start re-watching Ted Lasso.
